The Campeonato Brasileiro, known as the Brasileirão, is the country’s top club league. The first national tournaments were the Taça Brasil, from 1959 to 1968, and the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, from 1967 to 1970, both recognised as Brazilian titles by the CBF in 2010. In 1971 the CBF organised the first national club championship, won by Atlético Mineiro, and in 2003 the competition switched to a home-and-away league format. In a country the size of a continent, it is the tournament that brings together clubs from every region, year after year.
The list of champions includes names that are part of football history: Pelé’s Santos, Zico’s Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthians, São Paulo, Cruzeiro, Fluminense, Internacional and Grêmio, among many others. Because the title is decided on points over the whole league, there is no knockout stage to rescue a bad run: whoever leads at the end was consistent from start to finish, which is why every round weighs so much on the table and in Monday conversations.
A league like this is ideal for a prediction league. On WisePaul, each match locks at kick-off, other people’s predictions only become visible once the match has locked, results come in on their own and the table is recalculated after every match, with recent form, scoring streaks and progress round by round. Anyone joining while the championship is under way counts only the remaining matches, so everyone starts level.
Request your league and we set up the championship and the rules for you; the organiser gets access and an invite code to share with the company, the family or the group of friends. All that is left is deciding who becomes the league champion.
