The UEFA European Championship, the Euro, grew out of an idea by Henri Delaunay, UEFA’s first general secretary, who proposed a tournament of European national teams as early as 1927 and never saw it happen: he died in 1955. The first finals were played in 1960, in France, and the Soviet Union beat Yugoslavia in the final. It was called the European Nations’ Cup until 1968, when it became the European Championship, and the trophy still carries Delaunay’s name.
The tournament is famous for its surprises. Denmark, invited almost at the last minute, became champions in 1992; Greece, outsiders, won in 2004, and Portugal took the title in 2016, against hosts France. Alongside these stories, the list of champions includes Spain, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia.
With a group stage and knockouts, the Euro is the ideal length for a prediction league: short enough to keep everyone watching and long enough for twists in the table. On WisePaul, each match locks at kick-off, other people’s predictions only become visible after that, the champion pick before kick-off is worth extra points and, in the knockouts, the score after 120 minutes counts, with penalties shown separately. The table updates after every result, with nobody adding up points.
It will be the perfect excuse for the whole team to talk football by the coffee machine, for the family to gather around the matches and for friends to settle their scores once and for all. Request your league and we set up the competition and the rules for you; if the tournament is not yet available on the platform, place an early request and we will let you know as soon as it is.
