The UEFA Champions League was born as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, an idea of the French journalist Gabriel Hanot, editor of the newspaper L’Équipe, who in 1954 proposed bringing together Europe’s national champions. The first edition was played in 1955/56 and the final, in Paris, was won by Real Madrid, who beat Reims 4–3. In 1992 the competition became the Champions League and, since then, its format has changed several times, always with the same prestige: it is widely seen as the continent’s top club competition.
Real Madrid won the first five editions, and the list of champions has since included giants such as Benfica, Inter, Milan, Ajax, Bayern, Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United and FC Porto, along with unlikely stories like Nottingham Forest, back-to-back European champions, or Celtic, the first British club to win the trophy, in 1967.
It is the ideal competition for a prediction league: European nights have everything it takes to get people talking. On WisePaul, each match locks at kick-off, results come in on their own and, in the knockouts, the score of each match counts, with penalties shown separately so they do not muddle the points. Other people’s predictions only show once the match has locked, and the table shows form, scoring streaks and progress through the competition. With participants in several countries, everyone sees kick-offs in their local time, in 7 languages.
Request your league and we set up the competition and the rules for you; the organiser gets access and an invite code to share with the company, the family or friends. All that is left is deciding who becomes the league champion.
