The Portuguese football championship, the Primeira Liga, was born in 1934/35 under the name Campeonato da Liga, played by eight clubs and won by FC Porto. In 1938 it became the Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão and, since 1999, it has been known as the Primeira Liga. Ever since, it has been at the centre of café conversations from north to south of the country.
The roll of honour is dominated by the big three: Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting. But some exceptions went down in history: Belenenses, champions in 1945/46, and Boavista, who in 2000/01 won the first title in their history and broke the big three’s grip. It is precisely this balance between favourites and surprises that makes every matchday unpredictable and every prediction a calculated risk.
Over a long season, a prediction league is won through consistency. On WisePaul, each match locks at kick-off, other people’s predictions only become visible once the match has locked and results come in automatically, with nobody entering anything. The table follows every matchday with recent form, scoring streaks and up and down arrows, so there is always something to argue about on Monday morning. Anyone joining mid-season counts only the remaining matches.
For companies, it is a way of keeping the team in touch all season long; for family and friends, it is the perfect excuse for a group chat that finally talks only about football. Request your league and we set up the league and the rules for you; the organiser gets access and an invite code to share with everyone.
